The first time I used alabaster was in 2002 (Alabaster Sculpture Gallery, Cold morning Ref: S003) and I often used this stone after that. Alabaster is a type of Gypsum and often used for carving. It has been used for making sculptures by many cultures including Ancient Egypt, Ancient Rome, the Byzantine Empire, and Medieval England.
It is a soft stone that easily takes scratches. Two of my sculptures were slightly scarred in an exhibition only because people stroked them with rings on their fingers!
